What is Leadership?

"Leadership is the self-awareness of any individual to recognize their own inherent abilities to influence others." Jerry Fernandez

There are many Leadership Theories and Leadership Styles, and they are all as varied as the number of people that exercise leadership in our societies.

Are you aware that you are a leader? We are all leaders, because we all make choices every moment of every day. Becoming aware that you are your own leader, is the first step in your own individual Leadership Empowerment.

You almost always have a choice. Even when somebody else tells you to do something, whether you choose to do it or not, you are still exercising your own individual Leadership.

As for example Viktor E. Frankl, a Holocaust Survivor of World War II. He said "The last of human freedoms is to choose ones attitude in any given set of circumstances".

Mr. Frankl while imprisoned in the cruel and dreadful concentration camp of Auschwitz and witnessing the criminal execution of thousands, lost his father, mother, brother, and pregnant wife. He made the mindful and conscious choice to survive the concentration camp in order to tell the story of the pain, death and suffering that the Jewish people endured in the concentration camps.

He changed the meaning of his forced incarceration while almost all of the Jewish people in the concentration camp were being starved to death and murdered by the Nazis. As Frankl wrote, "Life is never made unbearable by circumstances, but only by lack of meaning and purpose."

"In some ways suffering ceases to be suffering at the moment it finds a meaning, such as the meaning of sacrifice," wrote Frankl.

The greatest genuine leadership that anyone can demonstrate is based on what Frankl himself discovered in one of the darkest's points of our humanity "all you need is love" as Frankl wrote.

“For the first time in my life I saw the truth as it is set into song by so many poets, proclaimed as the final wisdom by so many thinkers. The truth -- that Love is the ultimate and highest goal to which man can aspire. Then I grasped the meaning of the greatest secret that human poetry and human thought and belief have to impart: The salvation of man is through love and in love," wrote Frankl.

For further information please read his book "Man's Search for Meaning."

The meaning that you give to the choice that you make in the present moment, will influence the results. For as you think, so shall you become. The results are the manifested summation of past choices. Identify your purpose and be aware that you have the power to change the meaning. Seek to synchronize purpose, meaning and desired results by being mindful of your emotions. Listen to your heart. By changing the meaning, you can transform your attitude to be in alignment with your desired results.

Results matter because they create feelings that intuitively indicate how well we did or did not do.

Results matter because they are a measurement of everything that we do.

The meaning that you give this choice that you make, is going to determine how you feel about the process and results. How you feel during the process of your choice and at the conclusion, is what is most important.

  • Are you in a free environment? (Or is there someone holding a gun to your head?)
  • What is the purpose?
  • What do you believe is right or wrong about the present situation?
  • Are there winners and losers? (If so, who are they?)
  • Have you determined what is at stake?
  • Is it clear who will be affected and how?
  • Has the outcome been clearly defined?
  • How much time do you have?
  • What happens if the request or task is not completed as requested?
  • Has the reward been clearly defined, in terms of quantity, quality, and when?
  • Is there a penalty and what is it?
  • Is the performance of the request and or task beneficial for all concerned?

The self-awareness that you are a “Leader” is of the greatest importance. The choice of self-awareness is yours.

If it is to be, it is up to you!
